Former Australian Formula 3 Champion Calan Williams is now just one step away from his Formula 1 dream, having graduated to the FIA Formula 2 Championship with Trident Motorsport.

Trident signed Williams on the back of an impressive post-season test with the team in Abu Dhabi, where he finished sixth in the afternoon session of Day 1 and also ran in the top 12 in both sessions on Day 2 posting 254 laps overall.

Williams graduates to Formula 2 on the back of two seasons in FIA Formula 3 with Jenzer Motorsport where he finished as the team’s highest points scorer in 2021, taking a maiden podium with P3 in Race 1 at Le Castellet and further top 10 finishes also in Fance and the Red Bull Ring.

“I am extremely happy to have secured the drive with Trident Motorsport,” said Williams. “They are an incredibly professional team and we have been working very well together over the past couple of months as well as during the Abu Dhabi Post Season tests.

Williams drove for Gilmour Racing in the 2017 Australian Formula 3 Championship where he won the Championship in convincing style from John Magro before making the move to European Racing.

Competing in Euroformula Open, Toyota Racing Series and now FIA Formula 3, Williams arrives at Trident with plenty of single-seater experience.

Trident Team Manager Giacomo Ricci said “The 2021 Abu Dhabi F2 Post Season Test session was very positive for Calan. He was able to adapt very quickly to the FIA F2 car and this allowed him to be competitive both in terms of performance and during the race simulation. I am confident of being able to achieve significant results during the 2022 season.”

The 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship commences on the 18th-20th March in Bahrain along side the opening round of the Formula 1 Championship
