The 2022 Australian Formula 3 Championship calendar has been confirmed, the category administration announcing a six-round fixture covering four states.

The 2022 championship will be conducted at Australian Motor Racing Series (AMRS) events for 5 of the 6 rounds under the auspices of the Australian Auto Sport Alliance (AASA). Australian Formula 3 Director Ian Richards said the AMRS continues to provide a perfect platform for the championship.

“As Australia’s most relevant and concurrent ‘wings and slicks’ championship with a consecutive history dating back to 1999, we have found the ideal home with the Australian Motor Racing Series and the AASA sanctioning body,” Richards said. “The AMRS and AASA provide high quality administration, excellent race meeting management, and exceptionally good value motor sport for all competitors.”

The 2022 Season is more spaced out than previous years allowing competitors the convenience and luxury of time between race meetings to ensure ample preparation for each round. Key rounds include the Rose City Cup for round 3 of the Championship at Winton Raceway, the Errol Gilmour Memorial Cup at Queensland Raceway for round 4 and the Grand Finale in November for which details will be announced soon.

The Australian Formula 3 Championship has a rich history, having provided a breeding ground for drivers who have gone on to successful professional careers in national and international motorsport. Graduates since the series’ inception have included Tim Macrow, James Winslow, Michael Caruso, Will Power and Todd Hazelwood.

In more recent times, other talented drivers have used the category’s high-grip, high-downforce attributes as a springboard to success, most recently the 2017 champion Calan Williams who this year competed again in the FIA F3 Championship (a support category for Formula 1 Grands Prix) and recently had a successful few test days in FIA Formula 2 machinery.

Richards said the 2022 Championship is already looking extremely competitive, with strongest interest in years from a number of younger drivers, and the prospect of more newer machine coming into the category with the addition of the Dallara F312/16 to the series.

“There’s still a couple of big things to announce” Richards added, “We are hoping to lock in a seventh round sometime mid year and also there will be a first for the category early in the year.“
