2017 Australian Formula 3 Champion Calan Williams will start from 4th in tonight's FIA Formula 3 Championship race at Monza this weekend.

That young West Australian initially had qualified 9th, however post session penalties for impeding for a number of his rivals moved him forward. Williams was on a flying lap late in the session with the fastest overall first sector time before he was impeded.

Nine drivers in total were handed penalties following yesterday’s FIA Formula 3 Qualifying session, where the tow from the car in front is an extremely powerful tool for a quicker lap time. Drivers typically hold back to allow others to pass in the hope of gaining that critical tow, which in turn causes havoc for drivers on their flying laps.

Williams kept it clean moving forwards 5 places to the second row once the penalties were applied. Fellow Aussie and title contender Oscar Piastri was one of those penalised dropping to 15th where he will have his work cut out to try to maintain his shot at the title.

Race 1 takes place tonight Australian time and will be broadcast live on FoxSports.
