Australia’s international Formula 3 drivers have starred in the first round of the FIA Formula 3 Championship in Austria last weekend.

Victoria Renault Junior Academy driver Oscar Piastri took a commanding victory on debut in Saturday’s race with Tasmanian Alex Peroni joining him with maiden podium in his second season in the championship.

Piastri made contact with polesitter Sebastián Fernández heading into turn 1 on the opening lap, the Melburnian never looked back cementing himself as a true challenger for the title.

"Winning the first race is the perfect start to the year," Piastri said post-race one. "It was scary at turn one at the start, and I thought that it was going to be race over 10, but thankfully I got through that and made a good move on Zendeli into turn three.”

Jack Doohan, who testing Jones Motorsport’s Dallara F311 at Queensland Raceway last month in preparation for the season placing a hard fought 14th in race one, while 2017 Australian Formula 3 Champion Calan Williams moved up from a tight qualifying place of 23rd to finish 17th at the end of the weekend against 30 of the world’s best Formula 3 drivers.

Piastri ended the round at the top of the championship standings, seven points ahead of New Zealander Liam Lawson with Peroni 4th after the weekend’s two races.

Austria’s Red Bull Ring will also host the FIA Formula 3 Championship’s second round this weekend before heading to Hungary with the Formula 1 Championship.

The 2020 FIA F3 Championship will have qualifying and both races broadcast live on Foxtel.
