2016 Australian Formula 3 National class champion Cameron Shields is returning to Formula 3 racing, competing in the open class of the full 2018 Premier Series with Gilmour Racing in the teams’ 2017 championship winning Dallara F308.

“I am looking forward to once again competing in the fastest open wheel race cars in Australia. I have been impressed by the resurgence of interest which the category enjoyed during the 2017 season and intend to pick up where I left off at the end of the 2016 championship.

To say the least, I am keen to get amongst the action at the very front of the pack this year. I enjoyed the multi category competition of 2017 and with our current plans nearing completion, I am looking forward to an even bigger year in 2018. Being back, again with Gilmour Racing in Formula 3, feels like coming home!”

The final race of the 2017 Formula 3 calendar saw 19 cars take the start.

Gilmour Racing team principal Errol Gilmour is delighted with Cameron’s return to the Brisbane based multi championship winning outfit.

“Cameron impressed us all when he first stepped into a Formula 3 car at only 14 years of age in late 2015. His performances consistently improved throughout his 2016 championship winning year in our F307 car. I am confident his driving style will be rewarded by the extra performance the later model car now offers.

Testing at QLD Raceway, Cameron has adjusted very well to the increased down force of the F308. His experience with the Hankook tyres the category now uses saw him on very a competitive pace in only the third session of our first day. This years’ championship starts at Winton on March 9 and the car that Cameron is now driving currently has the outright lap record there, set when Chris Anthony won the 2016 Formula 3 round, so we have a great starting point for our set up. Cameron is also very familiar with the Winton layout and it is a challenging drivers’ layout which he enjoys”.

Cameron is again supported by long term sponsors McDonald’s and Dependable Sheds. Formula 3 will be only a part of the multi series approach Cameron is involved in for the 2018 season. More details to follow.
