Mallala circuit prepares for Australian Formula 3 Action

Formula 3 race teams from around the nation have begun rolling into South Australiaís Mallala circuit ahead of this week-endís Round 2 of the Formula 3 Premier Series.

It has been a seven year break since Formula 3ís last raced at Mallala as part of the National series, and on that occasion Ben Barker and now FIA Formula E driver Mitch Evans went head to head in an epic battle on the deceivingly technical layout.

As for times back then, Evans did a 1:03.06 in unofficial practice that year.

Now for numbers to look out for this week-end: They will probably centre on the figure of 1:04.32.

That is the official Formula 3 lap record set by Ben Clucas in 2006.

This time is set to fall with the new Hankook tyres already proving to be quick and the weather looking favourable.

As for the outright Mallala lap record, that is 1:02.57 set by Paul Stokell in a Reynard Formula Holden way back in 1994. However, if the track rubbers up sufficiently this weekend that time may well be shaking in its boots!

Morgan Park round winner John Magro is expected to fight it out for outright honours with young-gun Calan Williams this weekend with Nathan Kumar also hoping to mix it at the front

Chris Gilmour who won race 3 at Morgan Park will unfortunately not be present this weekend.

The National class is expected to be fought out again between Roman Krumins and Shane Wilson, however the unknown factor is local Adelaide driver Andrew Roberts starting his 2017 season campaign and who will be hoping for a home track advantage.

Teams will hit the track tomorrow for unofficial practice before Qualifying on Saturday morning. Race 1 will take place Saturday afternoon before another 2 races Sunday. Live timing can be viewed on Natsoft.
