Tim Macrow led the last race from lights to flag for the perfect round result. The rest was history.

After six rounds in three states, Alpine Motor Sports took out their first national title after clinching the Australian FORMULA 3 Premier Series crown at Phillip Island today.

The Melbourne driver led all but the first lap of the two races today to take the maximum round score of 48 points, while Christopher Anthony of Gilmour Racing finished 3rd in both races, leaving Macrow and Alpine with an unassailable lead coming into the last round of the series at Sydney Motor Sport Park in November.

Macrow post-race was joyous: “It’s been a great year for the team, which is essentially a new team, running an older-spec car. Alpine Motor Sports have done a great job all season, and it was great to cap off the title with a perfect score to seal the title.”

“The F307 is awesome on this circuit, and Cameron Shields and I were able to get away from the F311’s and have our own race. Shields kept me honest in both races.”

“We knew after race 2 that Anthony would likely finish third in the last one, so we had to get the fastest lap to seal the title.”

“It was fantastic to seal the title at my home track after winning the PIARC (Phillip Island Auto Racing Club) Competitor of the Year award.”

Team Principal Dennie Rumble was over the moon as he replaced the number 88 with a number 1, on the Alpine Motor Sport Dallara’s right rear wing end plate, signifying the national title win.

“To come in first year in the top class and win the title is amazing. The team has done a superb job all year. Never in my wildest dreams did we expect to get 14 wins in a season against Team Errol (Gilmour Racing) and Team Ricko (R-Tek Motorsport).”

We couldn’t have done it this year without our supporters. AIE – Advanced Instrumentation and Electrical, Monster Lubricants, Grove Estate and Inside Edge Novated Leasing have all helped us this year, and without them we wouldn’t have made it to all the rounds.”

“A special thanks to this bloke as well! (pointing at Tim Macrow). I might shout him a Grove Wine or two tonight!”

“We like to dedicate this perfect round score to our mate Luke Spalding. We ran the (#WeFlyWith23) stickers on our car this weekend, and while we know he’d be cheering for his team Gilmour Racing, we know he’d be happy for us.”

Macrow started from fourth for the reverse top-4 grid race 2, and got an excellent start to jump both Glimour Racing cars of Shields and Anthony before Turn 1.

Macrow then chased down R-Tek Motorsport driver Roland Legge, going side by side across the start/finish line at the end of lap 1, passing by turn 1. Legge tried to hold onto the lead by attempting to overtake Macrow on the outside at Turn 2, but ran wide leaving Macrow alone to control the pace and take the win.

In Race 3, Macrow was under pressure early from Gilmour Racing’s Cameron Shields, but held his nerve to hold on for the win. Macrow needed every point, including the fastest lap point in race 3 to secure the title for Alpine Motor Sports, and managed to secure that point with a 1:25.9368 time on lap 9.

The series points table after Phillip Island sees Macrow on 249 points with Anthony on 201. With only 48 points up for grabs at the final round, Macrow is assured of the title as his 14 wins to Anthony’s 3 ensures he has the tie-breaker if required.

The team at this stage intends on competing at the final round at Sydney Motor Sport Park on November 8-11, and are making preparations for 2017.

“We’d like to run two cars in 2017, and if we can find the budget we’ll definitely get an F311-spec Dallara. It’d be great to defend our title,” said the victorious Team Principal Rumble.
